Teenager saves 2-year-old girl from drowning in cold lake

Jacob Ursin, 16, was hanging out around his home in Gifford, Fla., when he saw something unusual. He saw a car veer off the road, crash through a fence and end up in the lake in his subdivision. The car then began to float out into the middle of the lake due to the force from the crash. When Ursin realized what had happened, he sprang into action. He jumped into the icy waters of the lake and swam until he reached the vehicle.
When he got to the car, the occupants rolled down the window and handed Ursin something precious, their 2-year-old daughter, Alaysia. Ursin ferried Alaysia back to the shore. He was helped ashore by other bystanders as his legs had gone numb by that time. Ursin said to the TCPalm that throughout the ordeal he was just trying to make sure the baby was safe.

The teen, who is a member of the ROTC and a youth law enforcement group, is being hailed as a hero for his quick response.
Jacob's father, Sheriff’s Deputy Ruben Bermudez, is one of those praising Ursin.
“I am very proud of my son,” Bermudez said to the TCPalm. “Last night he jumped into a very cold lake and saved a 2-year-old little girl from drowning. ... Jacob’s quick courageous, heroic act saved that little girl."
Eventually, according to Vero News, sheriff’s deputies and the Indian River fire department were able rescue the other passengers in the car, Alaysia’s parents Davonte Paschal and Vashon Ferguson. Paschal and Ferguson had not attempted to escape earlier because they were not able to swim.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Ferguson and Alaysia suffered minor injuries.
Paschal, who was in the 57-degree water for 24 minutes, died from his injuries at Indian River Medical Center.
